Here at Midland Mencap, we are always on the look out for creative opportunities for the individuals we support, as we know that this is something that a lot of people really enjoy.

So when Spectra contacted our Community team about running a series of four creative workshops at the Enterprise Hub, we jumped at the chance! Spectra is a performance project for people with learning disabilities, and it has been developed through a partnership between mac birmingham, Kate DeRight, and Queen Alexandra College.

The sessions focus on having fun and getting to know each other better through movement and theatre. All of the participants have commented on how relaxing they find the sessions and how they have helped to build their self-esteem. Luke described the sessions as ‘good fun’ and Shaun said, ‘It’s really good – it makes me more confident’. The fourth and final session took place on Thursday 12 February 2016 but we are hoping to link up with Spectra again in future. Watch this space! For more information about this or any of our community activities, call the Enterprise Hub on 0121 427 6404.

Wow! What a busy but fantastic year it’s been since Midland Mencap got the keys to Clifton Road Outdoor Learning Centre. Set within 2000 acres of beautiful green space Clifton Road now plays a vital part of our delivery and during the past year alone we have;

We are really excited for the future and look forward to delivering many more activities. We are also really looking forward to welcoming Trinity Specialist College to Clifton Road in September who will be using the site to support 18-25yrs old!

Midland Mencap has always valued the amazing contribution from our fantastic volunteers but in 2015 we slightly changed the way we recruited and supported volunteers to make sure we and they were getting the most from their time with us. We are really pleased with the impact our new approach has had! We have welcomed 53 new volunteers into the team with so many skills and experiences who are now provided 100’s of hours of support.

From getting stuck in at one of our health and wellbeing activities to helping out behind the scenes with marketing and administration all the way up to providing one-to-one support and encouragement to a child or adult with a learning disability, there are so many ways that volunteers can get involved.

New volunteers are joining us all the time and their contribution is invaluable. In recognition of this and to show our appreciation, Midland Mencap holds regular ‘thank you’ events, providing opportunities for volunteers to relax and socialise (and – most importantly – to eat quite a lot of cake!).  Glenn Pledger, who has been volunteering as a Front of House Volunteer since May, said, “I am delighted with Midland Mencap and the voluntary work that I have been given. The atmosphere here is amazing.”

We have been very busy organising the new arrangements to deliver Housing Support to people living in their own homes. Housing support helps people with the day to day things in their lives and helps them find things to do near to where they live.  We have worked very hard to welcome a lot of new citizens to the service as well as saying hello to new staff who have joined Midland Mencap from other organisations. Though this has been a very busy time we have managed to organise things very well and everyone is getting the support they need.
