Chloe's Story

Chloe is a very shy young lady who finds it difficult to speak to people, especially in group situations. When Chloe first started attending our Queensbury youth sessions, she struggled to interact socially and was reticent to get involved with group activities. However, the Midland Mencap staff team worked closely with Chloe to build her confidence and over the course of the sessions she made amazing progress.

Luke's Story

Luke was isolated, had mounting debts & at risk of eviction when Midland Mencap began working with him.  He was also new to Birmingham, suspicious of outside agencies and very anxious about what his future might hold.  Midland Mencap supported Luke to begin working through his backlog of paperwork, contacting creditors, agreeing repayments where due & lifting excessive fees/charges where this could be negotiated.

Adult Sporting Opportunities

Are you looking for fun and inclusive sports activities? Do you want to get fit, develop your skills and make new friends, or even compete against other teams? If yes, then look no further!

We provide sporting opportunities to people with learning disabilities of all ages and all ability levels. Our sports sessions almost always include a social element: you will often see us heading off for a drink and some food after a good workout! Joining one of our clubs is a great way to meet people and make new friends. One of the most enjoyable aspects of being part of a sports group or team is having the chance to socialise after training, or after we have played.

Midland Mencap’s Sports team is led by fully qualified staff who are skilled in a variety of different sporting disciplines. Whether you want to join a football team, learn how to swim or try out a variety of team and solo sports in a safe and supportive environment, we will have an activity to suit you.

All participants regardless of experience will have the chance to compete in a Midland Mencap team if they want. Midland Mencap has two football teams in the regional Ability Counts league, we enter swimming galas, basketball & netball competitions managed by Special Olympics Great Britain.

We are also the only organisation in Birmingham to offer Special Olympic Great Britain Motor Activities Training Program (MATP) where individuals with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities have the opportunity to reach their personal best in a sporting environment. Whatever the sport, our teams are often mixed meaning that women and men train together and compete together, creating a very inclusive sporting offer.

We often go to watch sporting events such as visiting Wembley Stadium to watch England or visiting Edgbaston Cricket Ground to see Warwickshire play and take in the amazing friendly atmosphere that is right on our doorstep.

From as little as £2 per session, you can improve your fitness, have fun and even have the chance to compete in your chosen sport.
