Doreen had been living in an apartment alone following the death of her mother a number of years previously. Doreen was referred to Midland Mencap as she was struggling to manage many aspects of her daily living & keeping on top of her home. Doreen was a well known figure where she lived, liked by many, but also a target to those who wished to take advantage of her trusting & friendly nature.
Midland Mencap have supported Doreen to take control of her finances, encouraging and promoting a weekly budget. Doreen was supported to think and talk about where she lived and whether alternatives had ever been offered to her. Midland Mencap supported Doreen to view and explore housing options throughout the city, until she had found somewhere affordable, safe & which met her needs.
She has since moved from a cramped, dated bedsit to a brand new apartment with modern fixtures & fittings. Midland Mencap worked with Doreen to improve her domestic routines, act upon post and encouraged her to put herself first. Doreen is now proud of where she lives, feels safe in her home & has friends she knows and trusts to socialise with. Additionally, Doreen now also receives care hours each week, introduced following a referral made by Midland Mencap upon recognising her changing needs.
Doreen continues to live independently in the community, accesses numerous groups/activities of her choosing & proudly shares news of her growing successes.
