Community Services Update – August 2021

The Community team are incredibly excited to see restrictions lift, allowing them to get back out providing activities across the west midlands! Check out below what they’ve been up to.

MEET THE STAFF:

This month we welcomed our new Sports Officer to the Communities Team.
Shakeil Barratt will be working across Birmingham and Coventry to deliver sporting sessions to enhance our wellbeing offer for adults and children in the region.

He has already started putting his coaching skills to use by delivering the football training session on Tuesday nights at Moseley School, and hopes to start up another football session in Walsall soon!

Shakeil comes from a sporty background and loves football and basketball. He now plays as a left back for Worcester City Royals football team, and represented his school abroad in a football tournament at Villa Royale Spain.

COMING UP:

Our summer timetable will be coming out soon, featuring a range a different social opportunities for adults across the region. As we will be sharing our venues with the childrens service, we will look for alternative community activities for adults to get involved with, such as: walking groups/meals out/bowling/cinema/tennis/sailing/social groups and multisports.

STAFF GOODBYES:

This month we all said “Goodbye” to Lara who had been working with Midland Mencap for approx. 5 years. She had a variety of roles within Midland Mencap including working at the Weoley Castle Community Centre facilitating the sailing and paddle boarding at Edgbaston Reservoir and cycling. We all wish Lara well in her new job.

DIGITAL TABLET:

Midland Mencap have also given one of our citizens a free digital tablet for her use to access all the Midland Mencap online Zooms, offers and Facebook lives. Plus, the ability to facetime her family members whenever she is unable to visit them.

WELLBEING WALKS:

We have been facilitating wellbeing walks at Cannon Hill Park in the sunshine which includes socialising, making friends, exercise and wellbeing. Stopping off at the café within the park for a well earn drink and rest.
