Luke was isolated, had mounting debts & at risk of eviction when Midland Mencap began working with him. He was also new to Birmingham, suspicious of outside agencies and very anxious about what his future might hold.
Midland Mencap supported Luke to begin working through his backlog of paperwork, contacting creditors, agreeing repayments where due & lifting excessive fees/charges where this could be negotiated. Luke’s support staff also supported him to book and attend appointments for benefits reviews, resulting in longstanding issues about Council Tax being resolved.
Midland Mencap, working in partnership with a local housing provider, supported in a problem free move to safe, secure & affordable accommodation. Luke, a very private person, would often remark about how his new surroundings made him “feel” better & that having got on top of money problems that he could look to “get on” with his life.
Luke now budgets and manages his finances independently, has begun using an e-befriending service to build his confidence & has developed routines for managing day to day housing matters.
