Earlier this year, Midland Mencap successfully applied for funding to run a 10 week subsidised swimming course for people with learning disabilities. By also providing transport, we made it as easy as possible for people to get active.
The course was incredibly popular, with over 30 swimmers taking part. From absolute beginners all the way up to Special Olympics competitors and from teenagers to people in their 50s, our sessions catered to all ages and levels and everyone had a great time.
Supported and encouraged by the Midland Mencap sports team, each swimmer was able to take things at their own pace. Some worked towards their 100 metre swimming badge, others built up their water confidence and others aimed to perfect their swimming stroke technique. The supportive and fun environment created by the Midland Mencap staff team enabled the swimmers to push themselves and reach their goals. A new course of swimming sessions has now started and we look forward to our members ‘making a splash’ again!
