Matthew first attended sessions over the summer. When he arrived at the CYP service, he was a vey reserved young man who was reluctant to engage with staff and young people alike. During the assessment process, parents highlighted their nervousness with regards to Matthew attending Midland Mencap, as previous settings had failed in supporting his highly individualised needs and 1:1 status.
The pictures show Matthew putting on a showcase for other young people during one of the sessions. Through the support and determination of one staff member, by the end of the summer Matthew was able to not only join in with other young people, but he moved from needing 1:1 support to sharing a support worker with another young person.
Matthew’s significant progress was shared with his parents who were delighted with his personal growth and development. Matthew has continued to attend sessions with the CYP service ever since. He has even been able to make a friend. Well done Matthew!
